A story of extraordinary courage, supreme sacrifice, and unwavering devotion to the nation.
The Tiger of Drass: Anuj Nayyar, 23, Kargil Hero by Meena Nayyar and Himmat Singh Shekhawat tells the inspiring story of Captain Anuj Nayyar, a young Indian Army officer who laid down his life during the 1999 Kargil War. At just 23 years of age, he demonstrated exceptional bravery in one of the most challenging battles of the conflict, becoming a symbol of courage and patriotism.
The Battle That Defined a Hero
In May 1999, the Kargil conflict began to reveal its true scale as Indian forces discovered that infiltrators had occupied strategically important high-altitude positions. In the rugged Drass sector, the Indian Army faced the formidable task of reclaiming these peaks under extremely difficult conditions.
Captain Anuj Nayyar and the soldiers of the 17 Jat Regiment undertook reconnaissance missions and fought relentlessly to secure a strategically vital peak during Operation Vijay. Amid intense artillery and mortar fire, the soldiers destroyed four enemy bunkers and engaged enemy forces in close combat.
During the assault on the fourth bunker, Captain Nayyar was struck by an enemy rocket-propelled grenade and died instantly. His courage and leadership helped save the lives of fifteen fellow soldiers, who continued the mission and ultimately hoisted the Indian flag on the peak.
A Legacy of Courage and Sacrifice
For his exceptional bravery, leadership by personal example, and devotion to duty, Captain Anuj Nayyar was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, India's second-highest wartime gallantry award, in 2000.
This book brings readers closer to the story of a young officer whose actions during the Kargil War exemplified the highest ideals of military service. It is a tribute not only to Captain Nayyar but also to the courage and sacrifices of the Indian soldiers who fought to defend the nation's territory.
